What Is a Kundli?

A kundli (also called a janam kundli or janma patrika) is the map of the sky at the moment and place of your birth, drawn the Vedic way. If you grew up in India, yours was probably made within days of your birth — and consulted at every marriage conversation since.

What a kundli contains

• Lagna (ascendant) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets the twelve houses and is the chart’s backbone.
• Rashi — your Moon sign, the anchor of Vedic personality reading (not your Sun sign, which Western astrology leads with).
• Nakshatra — the lunar mansion your Moon occupied: one of 27 divisions of the zodiac that fine-tunes temperament and, crucially, starts your dasha sequence.
• Grahas — the nine Vedic planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes).
